Thing 6: Flickr Fun
Another great online service. My husband and I bought a Mac last winter, because we were afraid that we might lose all the photos stored on our old, outdated laptop. How nice it would have been to find out we could have backed up all those photos online! In the classroom, Flickr would be a great tool, especially in the area of Social Studies. Very often, I check out books from the school library to show my student scenes from the time period we're studying. How great would it be to put them online. I could have my students view the photographs and respond to a series of prompts (maybe even via email!) or write narratives to go along with the photos I've posted. Copyright issues would be a challenge, however, to make sure the photos I pick are OK for me to post and for students to use. The other issue is that all students would have to have a Flickr account (wouldn't they?) to view my photos unless I put them in the public domain. Believe it or not, I still have some students in my class who do not have Internet access at home. Of course, this is not only a problem with using Flickr, it's a problem with using any of these online resources.

Thanks for being aware of the copyright issue - one that too many of us forget about. You can link your pictures to a blog or wiki to solve the Flickr account access problem. And, yes, access outside of school will remain a problem at least for a while - but, all students can access computers at the public library (when necessary) if they do not have Internet access at home
